Bayer AG has agreed to pay up to $10.9 billion to settle thousands of U.S. lawsuits that claim its widely used weedkiller Roundup caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The projected payout will settle as many as 85,000 of the 125,000 filed and unfiled claims, and put an end to costly legal disputes Bayer inherited when it acquired Monsanto in 2018. According to Bayer, settled cases over Roundup and other glyphosate-based weedkillers account for about 95% of those currently set for trial.
Per the agreement, Bayer will pay approximately $8-9 billion to resolve currently pending cases, and set aside an additional $1-2 billion to support a separate class agreement to address future cases.
Bayer will continue to sell Roundup, and will not add a warning label to the product.
Links Between Roundup and Cancer
Bayer’s settlement is intended to resolve claims that glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup, caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in some users, and that Monsanto concealed health risks from consumers after ignoring warnings that its herbicide contained potentially cancer-causing chemicals.
While Bayer has denied glyphosate or Roundup cause cancer, a number of health agencies – including the World Health Organization (WHO) – have deemed glyphosate a probable human carcinogen.
Domina Law Group: Fighting For Victims & Families
Domina Law Group has been intimately involved in Roundup cancer litigation, and filed what was one of the first Roundup lawsuits in the nation on behalf of Larry Domina, brother of Dave Domina. Larry Domina, a third-generation farmer who used Roundup on his Nebraska farm for many years, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012.
Domina Law continues to represent victims and families in their fight for justice, and is actively reviewing terms of the proposed settlement agreement. Because the settlement sets aside money for unresolved claims and future litigation, there is still time for victims and families to pursue financial compensation for their damages.
