Rumors and distortions abound when it comes to the new GIPSA regulations that would affect livestock packers and producers. According to the Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM), these proposed rules are neither complicated nor lengthy.
They should surprise no one. Truthfully, the proposed legislation is only four pages long and written plainly and clearly. The proposal also defines all terms used, further clarifying the legislation. Many despise the proposed laws because, if enacted, they would be held more responsible for their actions.
For example, one section allows for producers to sustain complaints against packers without spending thousands of dollars doing so. These laws would also require packers and dealers to maintain written records whenever their prices differ from the standard price or contracted price.
Greater transparency is exactly what some packers are afraid of.
