Farmer's Widow Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Monsanto Over Roundup Glyphosate

|

The widow of a California farmer has filed a wrongful death action against Monsanto that alleges the company knew glyphosate (the main ingredient in Roundup weed killer) could cause cancer and other serious injuries.

A wrongful death lawsuit filed in California alleges Monsanto knew that the active ingredient in its popular weed killing product Roundup could cause cancer and other serious illnesses, yet continued to sell and market it.

Allegations state that Monsanto intentionally minimized the risks of its Roundup herbicide, specifically the risk of cancer. The widow’s lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles federal court and seeks both wrongful death and punitive damages.

According to the widow’s claims, her husband frequently used Roundup on his 20-acre fruit and vegetable farm over a span of three decades. This caused him to develop terminal cancer, she says.

Glyphosate is actually one of the most widely used pesticides in the world. Recently, the World Health Organization moved glyphosate’s status to “probably carcinogenic to humans.” WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer went further, also listing specific cancers that could result from glyphosate exposure – particularly non-Hodgkin lymphoma and haematopoietic cancers.

California recently became the first state in the country to add glyphosate to its list of cancer-causing chemicals. However, Monsanto has long maintained the safety of its Roundup product, which last year yielded $4.8 billion in profits for the company.

Among other allegations, the widow’s wrongful death suit accuses Monsanto of failing to adequately warn farmers of Roundup’s cancer risks, designing a dangerous product, gross negligence in promoting the product, and defrauding farmers regarding the safety of the product.
