The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission will meet on April 6 to determine whether or not to renew four beer-only liquor stores in Whiteclay, Nebraska’s liquor licenses. The hearing was originally scheduled for March 7.
The date was moved back after five of the people objecting the licenses hired Domina Law Group attorney David Domina to represent them. Domina stated that he would require a few days to prepare and submit evidence, and the director of the Liquor Commission Hobert Rupe noted that the reschedule would clear conflicts around using the State Capitol’s hearing rooms since committee hearings will be completed by the new date.
Whiteclay is an unincorporated village with a reported population of 14 according to the 2000 US Census, and according to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission their beer stores sold approximately 4.9 million cans worth of beer. The vast majority of these sales are to people living just across state lines in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Alcohol is banned there, but alcohol-related issues like alcoholism are a major issue to the community.
The liquor stores need to reapply for their liquor licenses after concerns over law enforcement were brought up. Records showed that response time to emergency calls was slow, but the Sheridan County Board recommended that the licenses be renewed after finding that the number of community patrols were adequate.
