Landowners in Madison County recently met with the Nebraska Easement Action Team (NEAT) to discuss their options regarding the new Keystone XL pipeline route.
These landowners could sign an easement that would give TransCanada access to their land, or they could refuse and hold out. Attorney Brian Jorde met with about 40 people now affected by the pipeline’s alternate route on Thursday, December 14 to discuss what holding out would mean.
“We just want people to be informed and educated to make the best choices to protect their family,” Jorde said.
One of the things Jorde warned landowners about what that the officials going door to door would try to keep the focus on dollar amounts, rather than the specific terms of the easement. Questions from the gathered landowners ranged from what would happen in the event of a repair to the value of purchasing liability insurance.
“Protecting in case of a spill and liability, protecting in case of property damage such as to growing crops,” Jorde said. “(We want to establish) exactly how you will be paid and not simply, ‘we’ll pay you don’t worry about it.’”
